77 Optimists & 6 guests attended our meeting.  Al Grossnickle & Bill Katip were the guests of Pete Gano; Roland Kramer was the guest of Henry Church; Cindy Dobbins was the guest of Art Gakstatter; Molly McCaffrey & David Bell were the guests of Rick Kerlin.

Safe Assured ID:  Jay Tate announced an enrollment Oct 13 at the K21 Health Pavilion.  Jay thanked those who have helped enroll 350 kids this summer.    

Sherriff of AttendanceBill Landrigan, is rightly proud of his results.  We have had over 70 here for weeks.

Art Gakstatter presented a $300 check to Jon Lippe for the Positive Behavior Intervention Support program at Lakeview & Edgewood.  They “catch kids doing the right thing.”

Art Gakstatter presented a $300 check to Cindy Dobbins from the WCDC forSpooktakular.  We work with Millers Merry Manor & WCDC to put on this event.  Art reminded us that 1000 kids came last year.  This year it will be Friday Oct. 28.  Registration for the Costume Contest is from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Trick or Treat is from 6 to 7 p.m.  Costume Judging is from 7 p.m. on. Volunteers are needed to keep the kids safe.  Sign up next week.

Vice-President, Angie Tom, reminded us that Christmas is coming.  This means the Santa House is coming.  Keep the set-up, take-down & operation in mind. It will be open Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays.

Our Optimist Singers will perform Sunday, Oct. 16 at Warsaw’s Got Talent. The event is at Warsaw Community High Schools Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. 

Co-Chairman John Elliott reminded us that our Car Show fundraiser will be Sunday, May 20, 2012.

Lt. Gov. Sam Whitaker announced our district meeting at Hall’s Guesthouse in Fort Wayne on Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.  Contact Jennifer Dorman if you are going.

Past Pres. George Brennan invited us to the CASA Holiday Festival fundraiser on Nov. 11, 2011 at the Biomet Hanger from 6 to 10 p.m.  There will be a silent auction in addition to the wines, beers, liqueurs, coffees, & hors D’ Oeuvres.

Trina Hoy invited us to the November 3rd Community Event and November 4thEducation Summit about how we can encourage our brightest young people to settle here.  Call Trina at 269-6562.

Sergeants-at-Arms:  Luke BecknellJames Nesbitt, & Bob Jackson entertained us.  Video Editor, Jim Hayes introduced us to our 3 Amigos (our S at As). Those who have volunteered for Safe Assured ID were recognized.  Dr. David Haines explained “armed robbery” to us.  Angie & Kyle Tom are celebrating their 10th anniversary.  Grace College was recognized as one of the most military friendly schools.  Bill Landrigan is proud of Kristin Quick & the Warsaw H.S. girls & boys cross country teams for winning their sectionals.  Mark Skibowskiran in the Chicago Marathon.    

Dr. David Haines won $22 in our 50/50.

Program:  Molly McCaffrey, placed in 2nd in our writing contest years ago.  She has gone on to become a
published author & Western Kentucky University professor.  Her husband, David Bell, also a WKU professor has just had his 3rd novel, Cemetery Girl, published. He wrote for several years before he was paid to write.  David
 showed how to succeed it takes: 1) luck, 2) being at the right place at the right time, & 3) being prepared to take advantage of opportunity.  His writing even when not being paid enabled him to be noticed and make connections.  He relayed these virtues at our high school & library.
