Program:
Gary Gerard, the General Manager of the Times-Union told us of the business model of daily newspapers for the foreseeable future. Right now about 70% of the news content on the internet comes from newspapers.
The Times-Union first went online in 1996. In October 2011 the Times-Union started using a pay-wall for it’s online version. It is not hard to use, you enter your phone number and subscriber number to get access. I, your editor, have done this myself.
About 1.4% of the Times-Union’s revenue comes from online advertising. People do not click through online ads. The value of online ads is name recognition.
The print revenue is what pays for reporters. People buy print newspapers BECAUSE of the ads. Also, John Elliott observed that it is much faster to scan a paper newspaper to find what you want to read.
The Times-Union print edition costs $130 per year. That includes an automatic online subscription. The online-only version costs $50 per year. Only 8 people switched.
I know I like to read the paper version and then if I need to retrieve the information weeks later I can find it online. Both versions compliment each other.
Past President Dr. Charles Hollar and Ed Nordstrom remembered the advantages of learning responsibility by delivering papers as youths. Charliereminded us to remember our delivery person at Christmas.
