Past Gov. Ron Donkers invited us to the District Meeting in Marion Friday and Saturday, April 26 & 27. The finalists in our oratorical and essay contests will be there. It is being held at Ivy Tech, 261 S Commerce Dr. (I-69 & SR 18 east of Marion). Our club is the founder of the Optimist Essay Contest.
Spring Break Skate: Trace Hansen thanked Ann Sweet for making the tickets and those who delivered them to the schools. There were 498 kids who skated for free. Fred Nieter entertained the kids by doing the limbo.

Art Gakstatter reminded us we are looking for sponsors for our 4th Annual Breakfast Optimist Club City of Lakes Cruise In to Downtown Warsaw on Sunday, May 19, 2013. We also need people to work the event. Sign up on the sheets at your table.

Kelsi Griffith, Angie Tom, & Jay Tate have worked up a list of past car show participants and are mailing our post cards to them.
ML Motorsports is displaying their car. The Studebaker Museum andwrsw@46580 the Michiana Studebaker Car Club are bringing a car or two. The Oscar Meyer “Hot-Dog” Mobile is invited. Purdue President Mitch Daniels has been personally invited to ride his motorcycle and be the Grand Marshall of our escorted Cruise to The Village of Winona Lake.
Our goal is to host 250 cars, trucks, and motorcycles; have some fun; and make $15,000 to support the youth activities of our Club.
As Club members, we are being asked to commit to three things to help make this event successful:
1) Clear the date so that we can help with the event
2) Be a $25 Trophy Sponsor
3) Secure one additional sponsor of the event at the $500, $200, or $100 level.

President Elect Everett Nifong announced our 6th Annual Golf Outing will be Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Stonehenge. Florida scramble cost is $425 per foursome, including golf, cart, lunch, and driving range. Tee sponsorship is $100. A foursome and tee sponsorship is $500. Gold sponsorships are $1,000. Past Gov. Ron Donkers announced 77 people are signed up for our Triathlon. If anyone has any map making know how, please see Jim Hayes right away. We need to make maps for the 2 kids’ races right that are after the main race. The date has been changed to the Saturday JUST BEFORE the 4th of July. It will be Saturday, June 29, 2013. Also this year in addition to a short swim after the traditional participants, there will be kid’s races for kids who are 11 to 12 or 13 to 14.

Cardinal Services CEO Jane Wear was named her trade association’s Executive Leadership Award winner. We appreciated the Jane mentioned our Optimist Club to the newspaper.
Luke Becknell is celebrating a new grandson.
Chad Zaucha is celebrating a $1.5 million gift from Biomet towards the YMCA’s new building.
Steve Albertson had a successful year with his hobby. He did not say if he tried to tell Ruby that his “investment” in new equipment was a great idea.
Program:
Kosciusko County Community Foundation Executive Director Suzie Light highlighted the good work KCCF does by using our Optimist Scholarship Fund as an example. Suzie told of the hard work of our Scholarship Committee: Kevin Weaver, Don Reinholt, Joel Wihebrink, Mark Skibowski, and Trace Hansen.
Our scholarship fund started on January 1, 1988. On March 23, 1994 we moved it to KCCF. Then President John Elliott and Secretary Fred Nieter signed for our club. The balance at that time was $21,914.22. KCCF does the record maintenance and files the IRS form 990 for us. They also keep us on the right side of the increasing government regulations.
At the time we moved our fund to KCCF, the Lily Endowment was granting unrestricted funds to our foundation based on the new money that was brought in. This resulted in $10,957.11 in unrestricted funds from Lily going to KCCF. KCCF’s used unrestricted funds to help Fred Nieter start our Safe Assured ID. Ot Schroeder reminded us that KCCF seeded the Drop Out Prevention program by $50,000 from KCCF’s unrestricted funds in July 2009.
Our fund is a permanent endowment, where only the income is awarded. The principal stays intact to do good work into the future. From 1994 to 2012 we awarded $39,000 in scholarships and our principal is now $73,839. Suzie reminded us with permanent endowment, our children will be awarding scholarships to the community 50 years from now.
