86 Optimists & 5 guests attended our meeting. Matt Deeds was the guest of Jon Lippe; Jason Wilkinson was the guest of K T Kishan; Julie Runnells was the guest of Bonnie Bradley and Jeff Owens; Barb Smolen and Jay Bolduc were the guests of Rick Kerlin.
Prayer was offered by Pete Gano.
Pledge was given to the American flag.
Promise yourself was said in unison.
Martin Becker led us as we sang “Hail to Optimism” with a “pirate” accent.
Birthday Honorees: Gina Voelz, Bob Jackson, and Tony Ciriello. Martin Becker led us in the birthday song with “pirate” results.

Sheriff of Attendance: Sheriff Bill Landrigan and Deputy Harry Gigous took a well deserved week off after getting 98 of us here last week.
Attendance and Guest Book Chairman Don Kenipe asked us to turn in our Attendance Make-Up Meetings sheets with the Optimist events we worked. Please identify yourself legibly on the sheet. Also, it was noted by a newer member that having more advanced notice of up coming events would increase participation. Our newer members may not be aware of the things we do in the different seasons.
Past Gov. Ron Donkers made a major announcement about our Triathlon. The date has been changed to the Saturday JUST BEFORE the 4th of July. It will be June 29, 2013. Also this year in addition to a short swim after the traditional participants, there will be kid’s races for kid’s who are 11 to 12 or 13 to 14.
Tracy Horrell thanked those who helped at Art in the Park.
Dave Meier reported 63 kids raced in the Big Wheel Race. He thanked those who volunteered.
Bart Templeton is looking for greeters.
Fred Nieter and Past Pres. Ron Henry are looking for people to do the invocation this coming year.
Ron Chambers thanked those who visited the Rochester Optimist Club.
Past Lt. Gov. Ot Schroeder invited us to participate in the Rochester Club’s Pumpkin Project. For $75 they will deliver and set up pumpkins, gourds, 2 straw bales and corn stalks. Cost includes removal. They will give us $25 of each sale. They set these up at businesses and homes.
Martin Becker invited us to hear the Lake Area Band at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24 at Grace Village. Rumor has it Ron Chambers is featured. It will be funny.
Trina Hoy invited us to the Warsaw – Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce’s Taste & Trade Expo on October 12 and 13 at the Orthopaedic Capital Center. Exhibitors are needed.

IU fans were recognized.
Lt. Gov. Sam Whitaker and Lyle Enyeart hiked 14 miles up a mountain by Lyle’s cabin. They crossed this off their “bucket list.” Well done.
Those who have failed to shop at TJ Maxx were fined.

Fred Nieter reported the Warsaw Girl’s Volleyball team will be serving custard at Culver’s today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Ann Sweet is proud of her 5th grade granddaughter’s volleyball progress.
Trace Hansen is happy to have soft water again.
The Nunez, Hollar, and Reinholt households were recognized for academic excellence.
Marv Miller is proud of his son, Evan’s record on the Warsaw Tennis team. They are 9 and 2.
Tim Hori announced that President John Sullivan’s daughter will be singing at the St. Regis Club on Sept. 22 starting at 8:30 p.m.
Sheriff Bill Landrigan is proud of his granddaughter, Kristin Quick being elected to the Homecoming Court.
Jim Walmer is proud of his son’s 3rd place finish in Cross Country.
John Burtoft told of the lady who thought her dentist was too old to be a school classmate of hers. When she realized it really was him, she told him she was there. He asked what she taught. Unfortunately we are getting older.
In honor of “Talk Like a Pirate Day:”
Past Lt. Gov. Mary Ellen Jordan told us about the pirate with the “bounty” on his head.
Tim Hori told us of the young pirate and his buccaneers.
Coach Jim Kessler reminded us that pirate dogs say “arf.”
President John Sullivan told us of Johnny Depp going to a classroom to encourage kids to study.
Program:
Barb Smolen, Executive Director of the Warsaw Education Foundation told us of their development from being a catalyst for partnerships between business and schools for the enrichment of students. Now they also fundraise to provide recognition for excellent teachers and provide grants for innovative academic opportunities. Our ownMitch Goon is the board president of WEF. Past Pres. John Elliott, Mike Hall, and Tom Kline are on the WEF board.
One of the opportunities WEF sponsors is the Warsaw Community Schools Chess Club. Jay Bolduc, Director of the Warsaw Chess Club reported we have gone to the state finals every year the last 10 years. Last year 9 teams from Warsaw went to state. Madison was 9th and Edgewood was 4th of about 150 teams in each of their grade levels. A Red Apple Grant from WEF has provided handheld devices that record the moves a student makes. This record is then used as a coaching tool for the future. Jay has a vision to win the state championship. With this tool it is a little more within reach.
