In honor of Constitution Day, Fred Nieter read the following from Optibullette Editor Emeritus R Wayne Snider

Ben Franklin Proposes Prayer at the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

After independence was achieved, the Founders met for the purpose of hammering out the political principles that would guide the new nation.  On June 28, 1787, in the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, one of the least religious of the Founders, Benjamin Franklin, now in his 80s, rose to his feet and made the following majestic remarks [NOTE: Lest the reader miss the fact that Franklin’s speech is thoroughly saturated with allusions to God and the Bible, such references are noted in bold and direct biblical citations are indicated in brackets]:

In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights [James 1:17], to illuminate our understanding?  In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for divine protection.  Our prayers, Sir, were heard and they were graciously answered.  And have we now forgotten that powerful friend?  Or, do we imagine we no longer need his assistance?  I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs [Acts 1:3] I see of this truth – that God governs in the affairs of men [Daniel 4:17].  And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice [Matthew 10:29], is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?  We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that “except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it” [Psalm 127:1], I firmly believe this: and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel [Genesis 11]:  We shall be divided by our partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages [Psalm 44:13-14; Jeremiah 24:9].  I therefore beg leave to move – that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the clergy of this city be requested to officiate in that service (1787, emp. And bracketed material added).

This speech by Benjamin Franklin would now be deemed politically incorrect and inappropriate for public schools (unless significantly “abridged”).  Even if they were admitted to the history classroom, how many American history teachers today would even recognize the multiple quotations from the Bible?

The Constitution was Completed on September 17, 1787

Program:

Warsaw Community High School Performing Arts Center (PAC) Director Laurie Schotz gave us a virtual tour of the PAC.  Optimist Singer Director Martin Becker was instrumental in making our community aware of the need for our PAC and many of the features needed to make it most effective for our students and community.

Our PAC seats 364 in the balcony and another 632 on the main floor.  It features a Dance Studio with hardwood, sprung floor with surround sound.  Our Choir Room has a grand piano and 2 baby grand pianos.  Our Black Box seats 200 people.  Our Band Room is the largest room in the building, it seats 300 students.  The Dressing Room has room for 40 people.  The PAC is used by students all day long.

The fine arts enhance student’s academic achievement, social development, and teamwork.  The PAC reaches out to students, family, and the arts.  PAC events are coordinated with Wagon Wheel productions.  PAC does no summer nor December events, so as not to conflict with Wagon Wheel’s productions.  Wagon Wheel helps our PAC put on its MDT Music Dance Theater workshops to help students see if they want to be a performer.  Many performers make around $250 to $350 a week.

Some of the coming events are:

The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m.;

The Cinderella Files, Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.;

The Beat Club (Beatles Tribute), Sunday, November 17 at 2 p.m.;

The Joel Hall Dancers, Saturday, February 8 at 7 p.m.;

And The Fantasticks (SteamPunk version), Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m.

The tickets to the above performances are $25 per adult and $15 per student.

The Cinderella Files tickets are $19 per adult and $5 per student.
